“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
Psalm 34:18
Grief is a normal reaction for children to the death of someone significant. The absence of a person can take time to fully accept and even then, children may continue to miss them in their own way. Grief is not a problem we are trying to fix for a child; it is an experience they are living. Mood changes or feelings of grief, even months to years out, are a common part of grieving the loss of their person. Children need adults to be patient with them as they grieve.
Matthew 5:4 states, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” And Revelation 21:4 states, “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed.”
During times of grief and loss, we can remind our children about the comforting promises in the Bible and guide them toward the belief that their loved ones are in heaven, free from suffering. This is a promise from God! As adults, we need to find healthy ways to deal with our grief and loss to help our children navigate through theirs.
Below are resources to support your children in processing their grief.
